jUst found out my field coil in my alternator is shot. Does anyone know of a good (preferably inexspensive) way to fix or place to send for repair?
This is for a 1962 Cherokee 160.
The alternators on Cherokees are about 1950's chrysler products. So it depends on how you found out it was shot. The last time mine self destructed, it repaired itself mystically without a log entry. I think it walked itself to an auto shop but I'm not sure.
Why not just replace it with a Plane Power alternator? I realize that it might cost you more money to do so, but the Plane Power job is bulletproof, will last you for the foreseeable future, and is lighter! Honestly - is the Alternator something you really want to skimp on?
Picked one up from Aircraft Spruce for a couple hundred. Talked to a local repair shop about Automotive Altenators (just for Giggles), and found that the only difference between Aircraft and Automotive Alternators is that the Diodes are Epoxy'd in.
The info I received regarding aviation vs regular Chrysler (1960's vintage) is there are more diodes for aviation. Nothing was said about them being epoxy'd in.
I bought a planepower and it is much better than my old one.
Anyone ever have any luck getting a 24 volt alternator swapped for an automotive unit?
