Hmmm... according to my notes the PA32R-301 was the "Saratoga SP", while the PA32-301T and the PA32R-301T were both called the "Turbo Saratoga". Do I have this mixed up?
I have noticed a difference in the cowling of a few Piper Saratogas. Some have a scoop opening in front and others do not? What this specific to certain options?
There are four cowling configurations that I'm aware of:
(1) The normally aspirated Six, Lance, and Saratoga have largish D-shaped ventilation openings on either side of the prop and an induction air scoop on the left side of the cowling.
(2) The Turbo Lance and Tubo Toga have one BIG opening at the front of the cowl, under the prop. Some folks call this the "shark's mouth" but I think it looks more like a blowfish. There are no openings flanking the prop.
(3) Some Turbo's have an aftermarket intercooler installed. There are two squarish openings under the prop in lieu of the fish mouth.
(4) All the '94 and later Toga's have the cowling LoPresti designed for Piper with two circular holes flanking the prop. I don't know if there's a visible difference between turbo's and NA. Some earlier aircaft have been retrofitted with an aftermarket LoPresti cowl, too.

Joe
