Visiting Leesburg, Florida (KLEE) this weekend, I was surprised to learn that the price of Avgas was $2.38/gallon! I asked the folks at Sun Aviation (great people, great service) about how/why they came to lower the price of fuel so much - and they said that they had calculated their breakeven cost to empty the fuel tanks of 'expensive' fuel in order to place a bulk order for reasonably price fuel. They felt that if kept avgas at the normal price of $4.76/gal - that fuel sales would remain slow and that the FBO would miss an opportunity to buy low price fuel before it goes up again. Interesting business strategy - sell what you have for cost now so that you can buy more product at bargain prices. Thinking about it, it makes sense - I see many FBO's keeping the retail price of avgas high, because they filled their tanks when fuel prices were very high. If they cannot empty the tanks to make room for fresh low price fuel, their prices will always be high - and have fuel sales suffer.
Getting back to Leesburg - I don't know how long these bargain prices are going to last. If I had a warbird with large fuel tanks, I think I'd be dropping in to top off!

Even less at Pahokee (KPHK) at the southeast portion of Lake Okeechobee. Although I have not checked lately, Sebring is also one of the cheapest in Florida. And then there's where my plane is, F45, 5.50/gal I think. Did I mention KMIA (Miami International) - $8+ a gallon, plus taxes, plus landing fee ($65 for a PA28), plus all the rudeness you have come to expect from Miami, the armpit of Florida.

I guess Rob, on how you define "armpit" in this context. Haven't been to Panama City but have been to Miami and IMHO it qualifies.
