I get attitude about excessive "Handling" charges (as in "Shipping and Handling") but I'm not sure I would call $50 to ship a package from Oregon to New Zealand all that excessive. They could have put it in an envelope but I wonder how many envelopes out of 100 sent to New Zeeland would arrive undamaged. As for the cost itself, it would still have cost Approx. $15-20 to ship it down here to Southern California so $50 to New Zealand starts looking like a bargain. The cost to ship packages hasn't risen in proportion with the rising cost of fuel quite yet, but that is changing as I write. The cost to ship that same package won't be $50 in another 60 days.
I'm surprized more places don't use USPS...I've found them usally best cost, quick and offer just about all the features as UPS and Fedex, i.e., tracking, etc. Lately when I order things I request US Mail.
I've sent some eBay items overseas and I will never use padded envelopes again for small items like this. Loss or damage has been common.
Checking USPS.com, a one pound box from the US Midwest to New Zealand is $23.00 Priority or $10.00 First Class International. A two pound box looks like it almost doubles.
I would contact Chief with a simple email with these numbers in hand explaining that you believe their handling charges are excessive and their use of an excessively large box was ridiculous (it does go by weight though, not size unless it is a "large" box) and that you are requesting a partial refund. I think they will accommodate you.
I second the support for AircraftSpruce.com. They are first class in terms of secure online ordering, email confirmation, and items usually arrive next day or two, even if you ask for ground shipping. Never had a problem with excessive packaging or shipping charges.
I ordered an oil cooler from Chief, and it arrived defective. They send out a new one immediately and said to return the defective one when I "had a chance". Shipping from Philadelphia to Chief was $7 (USPS) a year ago. I was very pleased with their service.
I will say that I paid extra for the USPS tracking service which I'll never do again because it only tells you that the package arrived in the city it was addressed to - useless in my opinion.
I've had good results with Chief, I find prices are very comparable between the two companies, but there is a greater difference in shipping prices and delivery times. Aircraft Spruce has the bigger selection, I typically choose Chief first because they have what I need and their service and support has been good.
I've specified US Mail to save money and to get Saturday delivery, since USPS doesn't deliver Saturdays. I've had to place these orders by phone, since it's not an option from the web-site. Most of the shipping I've done is based on weight, not the size of the box.
