Because of space and cost constraints for hangars at my local airport (PDK in Atlanta) I have my '76 Warrior at a tie-down. It came with a very nice Bruce's extended canopy cover so that is great. However, I've noticed that quite a few planes in my ramp area have the tell-tale dimples of hail damage, which got me wondering.
I started imagining ways to use some type of hard plastic inside a wing cover to mitigate potential damage. Then lo and behold, a flyer arrived at my mailbox from Bruce's, describing wing and stabilator covers with hail protection. I inquired about them, and they are not hard plastic inserts but some type of foam protection which they claim will lessen/reduce damage.
So, does anybody else use wing and stabilator covers for their outdoor-parked craft? Any familiarity with these special ones from Bruce's? Any downsides to using them? One thing I've considered is that they could potentially trap moisture and create an enhanced environment for corrosion, but perhaps they've considered that in the design. At $1000 for the set, I would hope so!
I've read that wing covers are great at keeping water and frost off of the wings and protecting the paint from sun and hail damage but need to be taken off in high winds like we have here in NM.
I have been thinking about buying the foam wing spoilers so when high winds hit you don't get lift off of your wings.
