oil consumtion up and black deposits on the left cowling
The last 10 h my Pa28-140 has started to use more oil.
About a quart every 4 hours.
Also i discoverd blackish(not oily) deposits on the left side of the cowling.
The cylinders on the left side looks ok.
Engine has some 900 h SMOH
Any idea from u folks?

How many hours does it usually take for you to add a quart of oil?
Are your exhaust pipes left or right side?
Do you have an EGT or CHT monitor?
Re: oil consumtion up and black deposits on the left cowling
Last year i added a quart every 6 hours.
Exhaust is on the right side - the deposits are on the left side.
I have an EGT, always leaning to a red marking.
To me the deposits looks like exhaust fumes.

Look for a blown exhaust gasket, or a crack in the exhaust stack itself. The oil consumption does seem to be going in the wrong direction. You may have more than one issue, especially if the blacck is not oily. I'd find the problems before I flew it again. Remember one thing. Mechanical problems DO NOT heal themselves.
