I've got a cherokee 6, 260 and on occasion, in cruise, it would seem like the engine would "skip a beat". Not enough for my passenger's to notice, but I sure did.
Talked to my shop, they suggested I had a valve sticking and to try some MMO. Was skeptical, did alot of research here and on the boards. Best I could determine is it wouldn't hurt the engine.
Added some to the oil (1qt) and gas (4oz/per 10gal). The oil got dirty in a hurry (I had just replaced it and had cleaned the plugs). Changed it again and didn't add any more to the oil. Keep doing it to the gas. After about 3 hours I didn't sense any more missing. Just finished a 3 hour cross country from Kansas to Michigan, and not a single blip the entire flight.
I also changed the plugs out after about 25 hours and noticed not a sign of lead fouling. That was a problem in the past. I've now also gone to fine wire plugs.
We analyzed and tested both of these additives at Exxon.
Marvel Mystery oil is 30% varsol (charcoal lighter fluid) and 70% 30wt base oil some red dye and wintergreen fragrance. It is from the late 1920s.
Avblend is very light weight paraffinic base oil (sewing machine oil)with 1% ether and blue dye. It is from the late 1950s. If it is absorbed by the metal, why doesn't it leak out of the can?
These are solvent type products. Some people find them beneficial for sticky valves or some sludge dispersal. If you are depending on them for either of these reasons, you have bigger problems.
Both evaporate within hours in an engine. Neither one provides any corrosion protection or anti-wear benefit. Neither one will harm anything in the recommended concentration.

Hi,
I have used AVblend in my plane because I bought the statement that it binds on medal thus providing less friction on cold start ups.
Does it work? I do not know but Ed as I can see from your email address you work for a competator, how does your product compare to Avblend and Marvel Mystery oil?
You missed a couple of the other ingredients in MMO. About 1% dichlorobenzene, and trace amounts of "mystery" proprietary high temp, high pressure lubricants.
I started using this stuff in lawn mowers, weed whackers, chainsaws, etc. after inheriting a 20 year old lawnmower from my father in law who swore by the stuff. This old snapper (25 yrs) has still never had a tune up and runs great. I put it (MMO) in a weed whacker that would not start in the spring and magically the next day it started on the first pull. I don't know what the solvent is but it removes gum and sludge from an engine like nothing else. I now use it religiously in all of my air cooled engines including my high time O360 which runs clean and has high compressions at ~1950 hrs. I plan to run the O360 another 500 hours if it refrains from making metal and continues to run flawlessly. This "snake oil" has saved me a ton of money in reduced maintenance. BTW, all air cooled engines make sludge since they run hotter and have more temp variability than water cooled. A cleaner engine runs cooler and lives longer. I am a believer.
Holy cow. marvel Mystery oil is perhaps the ambrosia of anything with a motor or engine. I would drink the stuff if it weren't toxic. Cannot believe how it cures even problems snake oil can't cure. Have been using the stuff since about 1970 wherever and whenever. Never a problem. and I have 3 cars..5 OB motors...and 7 yard implements not to mention chain saws weed wackers and such. What joy...What rapture...
