I have a 1964 235 and am in the midst of IFR training in it. All is very well except for the turn and a bank indicator's fuse holder is a tiny bit loose, just enough so it flags the TBI once in a while. When this happens, I just push in and twist a little harder and it unflags.
Trouble is, it can be fine for a flight of two, and then just flags at the worst time. It is an S-Tec TBI connected to an S-Tec 50 a/p, and the other day while under the hood and with the a/p engaged, the damn thing flagged and made the a/p lurch hard left while climbing. No big, I disengaged, unflagged the TBI and flew on to a decent VOR/DME approach.
Anyone have a trick for fixing this fuse holder, or are new ones the solution? A old timer at the airport said just stick a small wad of foil in there and it will tighten things up.
Any thoughts...just click my username at left to email me.
Stick a piece of foil in it? Really?? Why would You want to risk the failure and aggrivation over a part as inexpensive as that one? I don't remember how much I paid but I replaced several last year and they were reasonable.
I thought about replacing the old glass fuses with CB's but decided that was best left for a time when I was up to doing all of them at once. getting the 337 approved to swap all of them would be as easy (If not easier) than for a single unit, but the depth of the CB's are different than the 2 different fuse holders in the 235's panel so the buss bar wouldn't connect without some weirdness. It would be nice to get that done though, The 235 even has a couple fuses behind the panel that can't be accessed easily or from the front. Dumb.....
make sure you have the right fuse installed. There is another type of fuse that is fatter then the standard AGC .25". I don't remember the designation but when you pull the cap out of the fuselholder, the fuse should fit snugly and not fall out when inverted. I would replace all the fuses at once. The 337 should not be a real issue with your FSDO. I'm sure they've seen many with this data. Call them and talk about what your trying to do before starting.
