What web browser are you using and is it up to date? If using Internet Explorer you may have a yellow bar at the top of the browser show up when you click a toolbar icon that says "Click here to activate and use this control". If using firefox everything should work as intended.
Let me know.

I guess I'm using Internet Exployer (Yahoo) and it is suppose to be up to date. But, we live in rural america and we can't get but a dial up connection and the phone is in the back yard on top of the telephone pole.
There is no yellow bar at the top of the browser when I try to activate the toolbar icons. This is what I get.
 [s][/s] [sub][/sub] [sup][/sup]

In order to use things like bold you click the toolbar for bold and [ b][ /b] appears. The first b is the opening of a tag, and the /b is the ending of that tag and anything you type in between that b and the /b will be in bold text.
For example: [ b ]Bold Text [ /b ] without the spaces by the "b" and "/b" would display as Bold Text. The same goes for things like [s][/s]. Anything typed between the two symbols will appear with that formatting.
Another way to do this is type everything you want to say, and go through in the end and highlight sections you want to change then click the toolbar icon and it will place the tags around what you have highlighted.
Hope this helps,
