What is the best way to get a Cherokee to Oman? Flying, ferrying or disassembly? This is probably an extension of the Transatlantic Subject.
Why am I asking? There is a slight chance that I may get assigned to the Embassy in Muscat and I actually MAY have an opportunity to use my plane. And if it is viable and authorized I'd love to do it.
Any thoughts as to cost and viability or each? I have to assume that Bill Cox has completed this trip occasionally.
Gosh Martin, living in Muscat where would you fly to? This is a nice enough city for that part of the world but surrounded by desert and ocean with some very nasty neighbors nearby (ie:Yemen and Iran to name two). If you get the plane across the ocean you might be better to leave it in Turkey from which you could tour Europe etc.
IF I get to go, and can bring the plane, (both are still in the nascient stage) I would fly around Oman itself, and possibly to the UAE, especially Dubai.
Oman is a relatively large country and does have more airports than I initially thought scattered around the country. They are also very pro-British and speak excellent English (yes, I know - kinda redundant).
But as I said, all of this is Maybe - I still have to get out of Kuwait.
Martin, you might take a moment to view the Earthrounders website: [www.earthrounders.com] I think you might find round the world pilots that have made the transatlantic flight to continue on through southern Europe, Crete, Egypt to Muscat. I would suspect they would be more than glad to give you their experience and opinions.
Just guessing, but I suspect that if disassembly was an economical method for transport of our Cherokees and other light aircraft, they current manufacturers would not be flying new aircraft to all countries as they do now.
