Absolutely, Stinson is a great spot. The folks at Sky Safety (Hangar 9) were great to me while I was there, even coordinated with the other FBO on the field to get my brakes looked at quickly.
Stinson is about as far from downtown as the International, and you can't beat the fuel prices!
Thank you,
I will use Stinson even though my friend lives north of the city,I could not find a good field north of the city unless some of you folks know of one.
I'll be flying from Albuquerque to San Antonio and it should be a nice trip.
I try and avoid international airports because of wake tubulence, one of my partners was flying a Cherokee to Albuquerque's international when he encountered wake turbulence, the aircraft was out of control until 500' AGL, both he and his wife thought that they would die that day.
Wake turbulence very bad. There's a current AOPA article about a Saratoga getting "ripped apart" by wake turbulence while on approach to land at KC Intl in 2006.
As to airports on the north side of San Antonio, there's 5C1 to the northwest, and 1T8 and 1T7 to the due north. They're very small airports, and you won't find Millionsair Jet Center with red carpet as the FBO, but if you like small country airports like I do, that's where I'd go to land in a Cherokee.
I paid 3.80 for 100LL at Stinson a couple weeks back. When the International can match that (when I checked, they were around 5.75), I'll stop avoiding it. And I didn't need a rental car because the nice folks at the GA friendly FBO at SSF gave me a ride to my downtown hotel.
There's no reason to fly a small plane into the International, in my opinion. Stinson is much friendlier, more efficient, and easier than messing with the big boys at SAT.
