We are flying out to West Texas in a couple of weeks to visit the Balmorhea State Park and Fort Davis. Looking at landing sites, it looks like a tie between Marfa, Tx (MRF) and Alpine, TX (E38). Both sets of runways are roughly the same length, with the same approach services available, and are roughly the same distance from our attractions, so the choice comes down to FBO amenities. I'd be looking into possible hangaring and of course rental car access.
Anyone have any personal preferences/experiences regarding either airport?
It is going to be hot, but I love that part of Texas. I have been to the Big Bend area just about every year for the past 10 and have used Alpine and Ft. Stopckton. I have driven to Marfa, but have not landed there, although they appear to have a good airport. The service I received at both Alpine and Ft. Stockton were great. Ft Stockton has a big hangar to put your plane in free of charge...at least they did 2 years ago. Both places have Enterprise that will deliver the car to the airport and you will be able to leave it it the airport when you leave. I preferred the town of Alpine over all of them as to things to do and see.
The museum at Sul Ross is really good and lots of good eating places. Don't know where you are staying, but the Indian Lodge in the State Park near Ft. Davis is really pretty neat. And don't forget McDonald Observatory. On second thought, I don't think you can do everything in less than a week!! PS Don;t get tricked into the Marfa Lights thing!
Thanks Dave, and I appreciate your input. My wife and daughter are so excited. Neither of them have ever been to West Texas. Looking on the internet and at the maps of the area, I'm leaning very strongly on Alpine.
