I am planning a flight from Mt. Vernon, Illinois to Chandler, AZ (Phoenix area)in a couple of weeks in an arrow. I have no experience flying the west or mountains. Any suggestions from anyone who has experience with this route.

You'll want to cruise in 12500 this will give you more than enough altitude to clear terrain and have a smooth flight. about 50nm west of ABQ you'll get some lively air depending on the time of day. In east az around springerville you can encounter some significant air, again depends on the time of day,
