Stoped at Brady, Tx (BBD) last week on the way to Big Bend. A really nice place to refuel ($1.95) for 100LL and very friendly folks. Fresh coffee, rest rooms, with showers and a loaner car for a trip in to town for some excellent Bar B Q. Big Bend is a nice place to visit during the winter months
We had planned to land at Alpine (E38), but weather forced us into Ft. Stockton (FSP). Rented a car in Ft. Stockton and drove to the Chisos Basin through Marathon. Car rental was $29 per day with 150 free miles per day. Car rental was cheaper than Alpine. Next year, we will probably plan on landing at Ft. Stockton. No parking fee and self serve gas.
In previous years we landed at Lajitas (private). Lajitas was taken over by some rich dude from Austin and has turned it into an executive resort. You can still land there, but you will have to stay in Lajitas at $200 up to $500 per night. Also landing fees, and expensive food and gasoline. We wrote Lajitas off, too bad, it used to be a nice place.
Big Bend is a neat place, if you haven't been you will enjoy the outdoors!
Dave,
Thanks for the info. Last time we drove. Stopped at lots of places on the way. But it is a long way from FTW. Next we'll fly. We drove past a runway on the south side of 170 west of Study Butte on our way to Presidio. Right next to the road with one open plane-port, no facilities. Border patrol had a C-206 parked there. Is that the Lajitas airport?
The Lajitas airport is about 15 miles west of Study Butte. There is an airport a little north and east of Study Butte called Terlingua Ranch, but I have not been there. I live in Granbury and this is my third year to fly down. The first two times we landed at Lajitas, but that was before they built the new runway 4 miles east of town. Lajitas would be a neat place if you have the where-with-all and wanted to spend it! There are at least 3 motels in Study Butte if you don't want to stay in the Chisos Basin. I assume you have visited Terlingua as well.

to anyone with info on airports close to Big Bend Natl Park, looking for an airport close to a town with lodging and car rentals, I'LL be flying in with a 172. thanks for any help you may have.
Try Lajitas REsort (private strip) 89TE on Air nav. We stopped there last year enroute from San Francisco Bay Area to Houston. The resort will pick you up at the strip, fun place, look at their web site (Search Lajitas on Yahoo, it will take you there). They have rental vehicles available at the resort, we rented on for the day and drove through Big Bend Natl Park. Highly recommend.
As the President of Lajitas Resort I would like to invite the Piper Owners to visit Lajitas and the Big Bend Region. We have an incredible resort facility and full service airport with fuel and other services available on a daily basis. This would be a great place to hold a Piper Owners Conference or Fly-In...
