"By the way, what else is in your map pocket that can contaminate the strainers? Dirty Rags? Cracker wrappers? Lint? Dust? Cookie Crumbs?"

Well let's see, since dirty rags, cracker wrappers, cats, and water balloons are thrown out the storm window and lint, dust, and cookie crumbs are stored between the seat back and bottom cushions the only thing I have to put in that particular map pocket are a few quick start avionics instruction sheets, some check lists, and a Ziploc bag with pink strainers but thanks for asking.

let's look at this:

"So, if you drain and replace 8 ounces of fuel, YOU’VE SAVED 16 CENTS! YAY!".

You weren't talking about what made sense, you were talking about what made cents! does that technique EVER work out for you? You know the one I mean, trying to divert attention away from one stupid thing by saying another? What an insecure childhood you must've had.

Oh, and for ANOTHER definitive answer, the PA28-235 POH simply states "drain fuel tank sumps".

I thought one of the key attributes of a good pilot is a good sense of judgement. Why would you blindly follow instructions in the POH when they don't make alot of sense? You have to understand what the POH is.

The POH is a CYA document for the a/c manufacturer. He doesn't want to get sued by the idiot who has an accident caused by contaminated fuel, but who put the contaminated sumped fuel back into his own tank. Getting rid of it is all the manuf can suggest. It's just another example of the POH being targetted at the lowest common denominator. I believe in Darwinism - if you're stupid enough to put crappy fuel in your tank, then you don't deserve to pass on your genes.

As a pilot, you make hundreds of assessments before, during and after every flight that potentially affect your safety. Checking the fuel for contamination and reusing it if it's OK is just one of those judgement calls. If you think the fuel that you just sumped isn't fit to go back into your tank, then shouldn't you question the fuel that's still IN the tank? Cause that's where the crap you just threw away came from!

The stall characteristics are much the same (same airfoil, same stall characteristics). The semi-taper wings have more wing area and a slightly higher aspect ratio. The larger area slightly reduces the stall speed for a given weight and the higher aspect ratio (not much higher) slightly reduces the induced drag at speeds near stall (while increasing the parasite drag). For the same reasons (larger wing and higher aspect ratio), the semi-taper wing has slightly better high altitude performance. The differences are pretty much inconsequential. In my opinion, the best wing is the one that has the best airframe and avionics attached to it.

Virtually all things such as lead are naturally occurring and whether or not they are toxic depends on exposure levels. It is not surprising that a child living and sleeping very close to a major intersection was exposed to levels of airborne lead that could be harmful but the suggestion that the exposure due to overflying planes a thousand or more feet above people would expose them to harmful levels is hard to believe. Our problem is that our extremely small consumption of fuel compared to the demand by cars and trucks doesn't provide much of an incentive for any of the bigger refiners to bother to spend much time and money to produce our fuel.

Having said that, I'm not suggesting that the regulators will not eventually ban all lead in our fuel so like all others here I do expect that alternates are being researched and hopefully they won't be too expensive or harmful to our engines.

> Reflector design has a HUGE affect on light
> output. We have tested some of the higher wattage
> systems and found no increase in light output
> (some were less) vs our 35w systems mainly because
> the reflectors were not optimized for HID lamps.
>
> We also sell the PowerPULSE light controller that
> allows wing tip lights to be flashed (together) or
> pulsed (side to side).

Aviation Consumer Compared our 50 watt to 35 watt versions from Lopresti and the others a couple of years ago. Aviation Consumers called the difference between our 50 watt and all the others as "Stupefyingly" bright. Our 50 watt produces ~65% more light than any Lopresti 35 watt HID. Yes, reflector design and coating quality can have a hoge impact on output performance. We use premium reflectors.

The powerpulse from Lopresti (same as MaxPulse) is NOT suitable for wig wag of HID because the 5 second warmup they offer is way too short. All HID requires 20-30 seconds of warmup before pulsing, so the plasma can reach steady state before pulsing. There are No exceptions to this fact. Only the 1 Hz or 60 PPM each channel (120 ppm both channels) is ok for HID. Do NOT use their other Powerpulse speeds. If these industry accepted facts are not followed bulb life will be cut by 1/2 or more. Early ballast failure is also likely.

XeVision has a US patent on this warmup Pulsing of HID technology. Patent Awarded Nov. 2009

I have flown several Cherokees of this same year model and the seats always seem to sit very low. On the other hand, we have owned several 65-67 model Cherokee 140s and 180s. The seats in these planes allow the pilot to sit higher and give a totally different view over the nose. Is the glareshield higher in the later models or do all Cherokee's of this age just have lower seats. I've thought about replacing the cushions with thicker foam but I'm still not sure if that would give me the lift I'm looking for. Does anyone else have this problem? Thanks in advance!

I don't know if you have spent much time in Kenya or flying there, my guess is you are taking your cherokee there, probably so.

But if not, I used to live there early 1980s, got my Kenyan pilot's license on the strength of my FAA cert, and used to fly with the now defunct Nakuru Aero Club. Flying over there back then was an extraordinary experience. In alot of ways, it was like flying here, take off when and where you want, no user fees, and generally the weather and scenery was spectacula. Upcountry destinations were journeys back in time and to another world.

The scenery and the upcountry experience is still the same, but, flying is very restricted today. The Aero Club of East Africa is a great source of information:

http://www.aeroclubea.com/

If you are not up to speed on what flying over there is like (or rather, what getting permission to go on a flight is like) I would definitely get in touch with them and get a primer on the subject.

The following is from one of the newsletters they sent me:

"Over the past three years, air operators and pilots at Wilson Airport have become used to the bureaucracy that is now associated with aviation in Kenya. Even little four-seater aircraft willingly 'taxi' to the Terminal for a "security check" by police. Pilots file a flight plan at a KCAA office, pay a Navigation Fee (even on VFR flights where they are "doing the navigating"!) to a different officer from the Kenya Revenue Authority, bring back the receipt to KCAA, and then give "Passenger Manifests" in quintuplicate to various seemingly interested parties, ranging from the Kenya Revenue Authority to the Kenya Airports Authority and from the Police to 'Security'. This process takes about 30 minutes to an hour, depending on the walking time involved from one's aircraft. It's a growth industry and many commercial operators now employ full-time staff to deal with this bureaucracy and to unburden pilots from this chore.

When pilots already thought it could not get much worse, a new "player" showed up at the scene. Recently, "Kenya Customs" officers have been harassing pilots for 'Manifest Forms', to the extent that overzealous uniformed officers forced pilots to 'shut down' their already started engines on the apron. The officers demanded "Passenger Manifests" and insisted on issuing a "Clearance Number" even on Domestic Flights, not only on "Departure, but also on "Arrival". To make matters worse, "Passenger Manifests" were demanded even if the aircraft carried no passengers."

As for the Nakuru aerodrome I used to fly out of, I heard this about it: "Nakuru Aero Club was closed in 1986 or so. The Army decided it was a "security risk". The building is still there, but it has been completed stripped and looted by the locals. So, only a shell remains. The Lanet airfield is still being used"

Chill out folks. It's only a matter of time before the no-lead requirement becomes real but frankly, it's not that big a deal. I've seen lots of tests of new fuels that hold promise and should (hopefully) be produceable with no appreciable cost increase.
I'm getting the vibe that no matter what I say, you'll sidestep my points.

When I do engage the issues, I'm chastized for writing a lot, and my points are ignored.

And I DID NOT SAY your sources are illegitimate or unauthorized. That COMPLETELY MISSES MY POINT. Again, an example of my points being ignored or sidestepped.

If I posted my opinions here, loaded with left-wing propaganda catch-phrases and terms, you'd be COMPLETELY CORRECT to question the foundation of information I'm working off of, and if it's accurate. That's what I'm doing with you- questioning the foundation of information you're drawing on. I don't think we can have a straight discussion because you seem to have bitten off and swallowed the right-wing narrative, complete with catchphrases and terminology. Your posts are rife with it.

I'm not going around and around with you anymore. I write stuff here, and it's not even read or understood.

I wrote too much again, didn't I?

Most likely, one of two things happened. Either the three bolts on the inside of the wheel fairing loosened up, letting the fairing vibrate due to airload transients, thereby breaking the bracket due to fatigue, or the cotter pin that retains the collar pin was lost, letting the collar pin come out, at which point the outboard attachment loosens up, with the same results -- vibrating fairing breaks the bracket.
