With the new update, my 530 now shows weather on the 1st nav page. I thought it had shown weather on that page before, but recently noticed it did not. Apparently, that feature went away when my units were updated for WAAS. Now I have weather on page one with my WAAS.

They didn't install it properly. The GPS and #2 comm antenna are simply too close. THe whole subject and how to avoid this are contained in the Garmin install manual. It should have never been released because there is a specific test for this that has to be done before you can sign the install off as airworthy. Make them do it over correctly. There is a notch filter that can help, but only if the antennas are not too close together. There should be at least 3 feet between the GPS and the comm 2 antenna. Satellite drop during radio transmission is a critical error that is a known problem, and that is why Garmin tells you how to avoid it while installing their equipment.
Replacing the radio isn't a cure because it isn't the radio's fault. It is an antenna issue.

Per your mention of the GPSS included in the new Aspen EFD, I am considering replacing my KI-256 AI and HSI with the Aspen Avionics EFD 1000 PRO PFD. Has anyone else done this yet?

I also have a few questions, if anyone can help...
- I understand it has GPSS or roll-steering included with it (a converter or something)
- My KI-256 Flight Command AI is integrated with my KAP-150 autopilot. I understand that it might be more involved and costly to install the EFD-1000 with this type of setup. I was planning to move the AI and HSI to the right side.
- It looks like you can buy it for $10k and I have heard estimates up to $5k to do the install.

Any information anyone has would be appreciated. I am planning to install this in my 94 Piper Saratoga.
Thanks.
When I look at the POH entries, the 430W is 1.5 lbs less than the 430. What did they take out that dropped the weight from 6.5 lbs down to 5 lbs? The antennas actually went up from .25 to .5, I assume because of the heavier coax. But 1.5 lbs seems like a lot to take out of the GPS when adding WAAS and terrain???

The STC has been accomplished with a model list, which I'm sure includes the Twin Commanche. A 337 is still required if you want to install it for IFR (not sure about a VFR installation). The FSDO will also approve your Flight Manual Supplement for the 430 which is specific to your airplane and equipment interfaced with the 430. Hope this helps.

I have the STEC 30 without GPSS. It tracks the CDI but very poorly. It is connected to a KLN90A. You state that you have increased the senstivity. How do you do that? The KLN90A shows a +/- 5 NM cross track error as The highest senstivity available and that is a lot of room to wander. Is there a way of narrowing this deviation from the desired track to less than +/- 5 NM on the KLN90A? I bought a new manual and there is no mention of this in its's operation. I have an approach mode on the STEC 30 which is supposed to giver a greater or tighter tracking sensitivity when tracking the CDI but I can't tell much difference. It still wanders quite widely when trying to track the CDI. For the most part I just have it follow the heading bug and manually adjust it in flight and can easily track the magenta line on the Garmin 396 GPS. If there is any way to get a better tracking from the CDI to the AP I would appreciate all suggestions. Thanks.

I think the answer is yes.

Why the hell do I think that? Two reasons:
1 - Chobham has owned Chelton from the beginning and is doing GREAT things in the world of Virtual Flying in the cockpit (not the actual term - but I've have a brain-fart at the moment). They have just come up with a phenomenal Auto Pilot for this also. My guess is that they will use the S-Tec distributors to sell their much improved Auto-pilot and MFD and PFDs as they go after Garmin and King.

2 - I am an Army Tanker by profession. Chobham is the company that makes the armor (or armour if you are a Brit) for the Abrahms and the Challenger. So, I have faith in the company.

Granted, time will tell - but so far, it seems like a good company who wants quality products.

I'm going to upgrade to a GNS430 which will replace my apollo gx55 gps, and I want to sell the GX55 after the swap.

The pixels on the bottom of the gx55 screen are starting to fade/die. The bottom 1/8" of the screen is unredable, you can make out the icons on the bottom (msg, fpl, apr, ect). To get the most out of the sale i thought i might try to get it repaired or the screen replaced, is this possible? I know this unit has been discontinued for a pretty long time now. What are your guys thoughts??

I have to agree about the poor service from S-Tec. I was a dealer for S-Tec for 20 years and can speak with authority. The original company was a pioneer in the autopilot business wining many awards from their piers.

The problems began when Meggitt bought S-Tec. Meggitts aim was to acquire the vast amount of STC's that S-Tec had acquired, integrate it with it's high end line and port it to larger aircraft. This they did and support for small GA aircraft vanished as well as support for the local small avionic shop. The numbers did not wok out for most shops. A system at 20,000 marked up 5% is $1000 profit. If there was a problem that profit drop very quickly and labor costs go up as the work stops and re-scheduling has to be done. This was one of the reason we dropped then and so did many other shops.

During this period, when you called S-Tec, you could feel the tension from the folks you talked to. They were afraid of loosing their jobs. In fact after the dust settled everyone that was with the company in the old days had been replaced. Will Colbram make a difference....no!

If you have a choice between S-Tec and Century, always go with Century. They are a better autopilot . Unfortunately you sometimes don't have a choice since Century do not have as many STC's for newer aircraft.

Normally true Paul. But take a weak 5 amp CB add three nav lights that combine for a 5.6 amp draw and you get a tripping CB. That's why I think the later PA28's have a 7 amp CB with the rest of the system unchanged. Could be wrong since I really am not the greatest spark chaser in the world but that's what I found on my Arrow.
